Do you know who your customer is?

Do you really know who your customer is? Watch the video: Building a Better Business- One Brick at a Time! Part of our YouTube Channel @The Leader Room.

It’s a question that sounds simple on the surface, but it’s often the one that trips up the most successful leaders. When we start a business, we often cast a wide net. We want to be helpful, we want to solve problems, and we want to keep the lights on. So, we try to be everything to everyone.

But over time, that “everything to everyone” approach becomes a weight. It dilutes our energy, complicates our service model, and (perhaps most importantly) it pulls your focus away from the people we are actually best equipped to help. So ask:

  • Are you trying to be everything to everyone?
  • Now you know what you know, who are you actually building your business for?
  • Who are the customers you genuinely understand?
  • Who is your ideal customer? Has that changed as your business has grown?
  • Are you spending too much time, energy, resource on those who are not really you?
  • What can you generate if you lean into your ideal customer?

From Clarity Comes Capability

The theory is simple: when you are crystal clear on who your ideal customer is, everything else gets easier. Marketing becomes more direct. Sales conversations become more natural. Your service delivery becomes more purposeful because you aren’t constantly reinventing the wheel to suit a customer who isn’t a fit.

Leaning into your ideal customer is not about exclusion.

  • It’s about alignment.
  • It’s about ensuring that the time, energy, and resources you pour into your business are generating the highest possible return.
  • It’s not just for your bottom line, but for your sanity as a leader.

So, this week, take a step back from the daily churn. Ask yourself: Are you building a business that serves your vision, or one that’s just trying to please everyone?
