Are you a leader who’s carrying the weight?
Leading you’re own thing has become the biggest spectator sport in the country. It can feel like every decision you make will get a reaction from one of a multitude of spectator groups. These groups traditionally included staff/team members, customers , suppliers and the numerous government bodies responsible for good business behaviour. You interact with these groups to balance moving forward or lessening the impact of any threats they may bring to your table. Either way you carry the weight of the how the decisions you make effect the way these spectators interact with you.
With the rise of social media we now have reviewers, ‘experts’ and trolls. You can choose how you build your online persona either to build a future and/or defend the present.
As a player on the stage of business, we can work with these spectators to build our business or charity. But if we slip into paranoia we increase the weight of the impact ‘virtual’ spectators can have a real impact on your real life business. The leadership weight is there if you are moving forward with spectators or huddling down to combat the impact of them.
Is the weight real or just your perception of reality?
To be honest it doesn’t matter. If you feel the weight it is real.
So to release the weight you either have to do something that impacts on the spectators. Or you have to change your perception of that weight.
How do I release some of the weight of leadership?
We (Thomas Jardine & Co) have found that the best people to help you release the weight you carry are fellow leaders. They live and breathe in you reality. They understand the weights you carry. Leaders help other leaders change their perceptions. In well facilitated groups , leaders can change weight burdens into weights that help you build momentum to move forward.
